According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 18.5 square miles, of which 17.8 square miles is land and 0.7 square miles, or 3.79%, is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,451 people, 2,398 households, and 1,832 families residing in the town. The population density was 363.4 people per square mile. There were 2,494 housing units at an average density of 140.5 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.12% White, 0.36% African American, 0.06% Native American, 1.30% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.22% of the population.
There were 2,398 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.3% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 years of age or older.
